Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: An Honest Comparison

One crystal, two origin stories

A diamond is carbon, arranged in a cubic lattice so tight and so regular that it becomes the hardest material found in nature. That definition says nothing about where the crystal formed, and neither does the crystal itself. A lab-grown diamond is not a substitute for a diamond or a likeness of one. It is a diamond: the same element, the same structure, the same physics.

Because the material is identical, everything that follows from the material is identical too. The properties that matter when light enters a diamond, brilliance, fire, scintillation, are set by the crystal, not by its birthplace.

A billion years, or a few weeks

Most natural diamonds crystallized between one and three billion years ago, more than a hundred miles down, where the mantle supplies the pressure and heat that carbon needs to take its hardest form. Ancient volcanic eruptions carried them toward the surface, and mining brings them the rest of the way.

A growth lab recreates those conditions directly. High-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) presses squeeze carbon around a diamond seed at mantle-like pressures; chemical vapor deposition (CVD) builds the crystal from carbon-rich gas, layer by layer, in a vacuum chamber. Either way, carbon does exactly what carbon does under those conditions, it forms diamond. The process takes weeks rather than eons, which is the only step nature performs that a lab does not: the waiting.

That is the honest summary of origin. One path runs through geologic time and a mine. The other runs through engineering. The crystal at the end of each is the same.

Graded by the same labs, to the same standard

Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same independent gemological laboratories that grade mined stones, on the same scales: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. An F-color, VS1 lab-grown diamond is held to the same standard as an F-color, VS1 mined one.

Telling the two apart requires specialized laboratory instruments that read growth patterns and trace-element signatures, analysis beyond what a jeweler's loupe or a standard tester can resolve. Many lab-grown diamonds are also Type IIa, the most chemically pure classification of diamond, a purity found in only a small fraction of natural stones. Origin is disclosed, not detected: certified lab-grown diamonds are laser-inscribed on the girdle with their report number, so what you own is documented from the start.

A lab-grown diamond typically costs 70–90% less than a comparable mined stone. The gap is not a markdown and it is not a quality tier. It reflects economics: growing a diamond takes weeks of energy and equipment rather than exploration, extraction, and a long chain of intermediaries. Shorter supply chain, lower cost, the certificate reads the same.

In practice, the difference changes what a budget can do. The same amount that buys a modest mined stone buys a lab-grown diamond that is larger, better cut, higher in color and clarity, or all of these at once. Cut is where fire lives, and being able to insist on an excellent cut without compromise is the quietest advantage of the price difference.

Resale value, honestly

Here is the part of this comparison that deserves plain language. Lab-grown diamonds resell for less than natural diamonds, and lab-grown prices have fallen in recent years as production has scaled. If you buy a lab diamond expecting to trade it later at a profit, you will be disappointed. For the record, natural diamonds also typically resell well below their retail price, but their floor is higher, and that difference is real.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is crystallized carbon with the same structure, hardness, and optical properties as a mined diamond, it is diamond by every physical and gemological measure. In 2018 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission removed the word "natural" from its definition of a diamond, reflecting that origin does not change what the material is.
Can a jeweler tell the difference?
Not by looking.
